The early medieval period, often called the Dark Ages, saw a decline in trade, urbanization, and literacy in many regions. However, it also witnessed the rise of new kingdoms, the development of monasticism, and the preservation of classical knowledge within monasteries. The High Middle Ages, from the 11th to the 13th centuries, experienced a resurgence of economic growth, population increase, and intellectual activity. This era saw the construction of great cathedrals, the growth of universities, and the flourishing of chivalry and courtly love.

The late medieval period, from the 14th to the 15th centuries, was marked by challenges such as the Black Death, widespread famine, and conflicts like the Hundred Years' War. Despite these hardships, it was also a time of significant artistic and literary achievements, laying the groundwork for the Renaissance. The concept of "medieval" itself has evolved over time, with earlier periods often viewing it as a stagnant "middle" between the glories of antiquity and the rebirth of classical learning. Modern scholarship presents a more nuanced view, recognizing the dynamism and innovation of this formative period in European history.
