Etäohjausyritykset, known in English as remote access scams or remote desktop scams, are a type of fraud where criminals impersonate legitimate technical support personnel or other trusted entities to gain unauthorized access to a victim's computer. The goal is typically to steal personal information, financial data, or to install malware.

These scams often begin with a deceptive phone call, email, or pop-up message. The message might claim that the victim's computer has a virus, a security breach, or a critical issue that requires immediate attention. The perpetrator will then pressure the victim to grant them remote access to their device, often by asking them to download specific software or visit a malicious website. Once remote access is established, the scammer can view the victim's screen, control their mouse and keyboard, and access any files or sensitive information stored on the computer.

Victims are sometimes asked to pay for unnecessary or non-existent services to "fix" the fabricated problem. In other cases, the scammers might install ransomware to lock the victim's files until a ransom is paid, or they might steal login credentials for online banking, social media, or other accounts.

To protect against etäohjausyritykset, it is crucial to be skeptical of unsolicited contact claiming to be from technical support. Legitimate companies rarely initiate contact this way. Never grant remote access to your computer to someone you don't know or trust. If you receive such a notification, hang up the phone or close the pop-up and contact the company directly through their official channels to verify the issue. Installing reputable antivirus software and keeping it updated can also help detect and prevent malicious software often used in these scams.
