Etinci

Etinci is a small village situated in the northern part of the Banská Bystrica Region of Slovakia. The settlement lies within the administrative boundaries of the municipality of Žiar nad Hronom and is surrounded by the rolling hills of the Low Tatras. According to the latest census, the village has an estimated population of 320 residents, most of whom are engaged in agriculture and small‑scale forestry.

The origins of Etinci can be traced back to the 14th century when it was first mentioned in regional land records as a minor settlement within the domain of the Zvolen lordship. Over the centuries the village developed a modest agrarian community, with a particular emphasis on rye and barley cultivation. During the 19th century, Etinci benefitted from the construction of a nearby railway line that connected it to the larger towns of Žiar and Banská Bystrica, thereby facilitating the transport of grain and timber. In the present day, the local economy remains largely rural, though there is a growing interest in agrotourism and the promotion of traditional Slovak cuisine.

Culturally, Etinci hosts an annual harvest festival in late September, during which residents celebrate with folk music, dance performances, and the preparation of local pastries. The village’s historic wooden church, dedicated to Saint Michael, dates from the late 19th century and is considered an example of rural ecclesiastical architecture in the region. The church serves not only as a place of worship but also as a communal gathering point for social events.

For transportation, Etinci is accessible via a regional bus service that operates between Žiar nad Hronom and Banská Bystrica. The nearest major highway is the D1, located approximately 12 kilometres to the south. This connectivity allows residents easy access to larger commercial centres while preserving the village’s tranquil rural character.
