EthernetIndustrial is a term that refers to the implementation and application of Ethernet networking technology within industrial environments. Traditionally, industrial automation systems relied on proprietary fieldbus networks designed for specific control tasks and harsh operating conditions. However, as industrial demands for higher bandwidth, faster communication, and interoperability increased, Ethernet began to be adapted for these challenging settings.

The adoption of Ethernet in industrial settings is driven by several key advantages. It offers significantly higher data transfer rates compared to many older fieldbus systems, enabling the transmission of larger data packets, such as sensor data, video streams, and diagnostic information. This increased bandwidth is crucial for modern applications like Industry 4.0, the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), and advanced analytics. Furthermore, Ethernet's widespread use in enterprise networks means that engineers and IT professionals are already familiar with its protocols and infrastructure, simplifying integration and reducing training costs.

Industrial Ethernet, however, is not a direct replica of standard IT Ethernet. It incorporates specific enhancements and protocols to meet the rigorous requirements of manufacturing floors. These include determinism, which ensures that data arrives within a predictable timeframe, crucial for real-time control applications. Real-time Ethernet protocols like EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, and EtherCAT are examples of solutions that achieve this determinism. Industrial Ethernet also addresses robustness, employing ruggedized connectors, cables, and enclosures to withstand vibration, extreme temperatures, and electromagnetic interference common in factories. Security is another consideration, with industrial networks often requiring specialized security measures to protect against cyber threats.
