This acyl chloride then readily reacts with the alcohol to form the ester, often with the evolution of gaseous byproducts like SO2 and HCl. Carbodiimides, such as dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCC) or diisopropylcarbodiimide (DIC), are also widely used coupling agents that facilitate ester formation by activating the carboxylic acid in situ.

For more sensitive substrates or when mild conditions are required, reagents like N,N'-carbonyldiimidazole (CDI) are preferred. CDI reacts with the carboxylic acid to form an acyl imidazole, which is then easily displaced by the alcohol.
