Erhvervsskoler

Erhvervsskoler are Danish institutions that provide vocational education at the upper secondary level, primarily through the erhvervsuddannelse (EUD). They combine school-based teaching with practical training in workshops and with internships in partner companies, aiming to prepare students for skilled trades and for further education or work.

The typical EUD pathway begins with a grundforløb (foundation course), which covers general subjects and introductory vocational training. This is followed by a hovedforløb (main course) focused on a specific trade or occupation, usually ending with an on-the-job apprenticeship. Students take a svendeprøve to obtain a certificate of competence.

Programs are offered across a wide range of sectors, including construction, technology, industry, health care, service, agriculture, and business. Erhvervsskoler maintain dedicated facilities such as workshops and laboratories, and work closely with local employers to organize internships and practical training.

Access is primarily for young people completing compulsory schooling, but adults may also enroll in continuing vocational education. The aim is to combine theoretical knowledge with practical skills, enabling graduates to enter the labor market or continue to higher vocational education or, in some cases, higher education through programs such as EUX.

Erhvervsskoler form part of the Danish upper secondary education system and are publicly funded. They are organized to respond to regional labor market needs, promote skilled craftsmanship, and support pathways between vocational education and other forms of tertiary study.
