Ergonoma

Ergonoma is a term that has appeared in limited, specialized discussions but does not have a single, widely accepted definition. The word is usually treated as a neologism formed from the Greek roots ergon, meaning “work,” and a nominal suffix such as -oma, but the precise intent varies by author. Because there is no standard entry in major dictionaries, the meaning of ergonoma is best determined from context.

Possible interpretations include: as a label for a designation of a work or project within an organization; as a theoretical construct in studies of labor, where ergonoma denotes the “name of work” or “task identity”; or more generally as a placeholder term for a unit of work in productivity analyses. Some writers may use ergonoma metaphorically to refer to the normative idea of a “work-name” that identifiers tasks, roles, or outputs, rather than to an established concept.

In scholarly practice, ergonoma may appear only in essays or proposals and rarely in formal definitions. It should not be confused with ergonomics, the applied science of designing workplaces and products to fit human use. When encountered, ergonoma’s meaning is almost always explained by the author.
