Eremitische

Eremitische (eremitsch) is a German adjective describing things related to eremitism, the practice of living as a hermit. The term derives from Greek erēmitēs, meaning “desert dweller,” via Latin eremita, and is connected with the broader concept of solitary asceticism.

In religious contexts, eremitism denotes a life of solitary withdrawal pursued for prayer, contemplation, and spiritual discipline. Its origins lie in the early Christian church, notably among the Desert Fathers and Mothers in Egypt and the Levant, who sought closeness to God through solitude. Eremitic life emphasizes silence, fasting, prayer, and self-denial, with practitioners often residing in secluded cells, caves, or hermitages near communities but apart from them.

Eremitism is typically distinguished from cenobitic monasticism, which centers on communal life under a shared rule.
