Epänewtonilaisilla refers to non-Newtonian fluids, substances that do not follow Newton's law of viscosity. This means their viscosity, or resistance to flow, changes depending on the applied stress or strain rate. Unlike Newtonian fluids such as water or oil, whose viscosity remains constant regardless of how vigorously they are stirred or squeezed, non-Newtonian fluids exhibit more complex behavior.

There are several types of non-Newtonian fluids, categorized by how their viscosity changes. Shear-thinning fluids, also known as pseudoplastic fluids, become less viscous when agitated or subjected to stress. Examples include ketchup, paint, and blood. When you shake a ketchup bottle, its viscosity decreases, making it easier to pour. Conversely, shear-thickening fluids, or dilatant fluids, increase in viscosity under stress. Oobleck, a mixture of cornstarch and water, is a common demonstration of this. It feels like a liquid when handled gently but becomes solid-like when punched or squeezed.

Other categories include thixotropic fluids, which become less viscous over time when subjected to shear stress and return to a higher viscosity when the stress is removed, and rheopectic fluids, which show the opposite time-dependent behavior. These properties make non-Newtonian fluids fascinating subjects of study in physics and chemistry, with applications in various industries, from food processing and cosmetics to oil drilling and materials science. Understanding their behavior is crucial for designing and controlling processes involving these materials.
