Epoksiidrõngas, also known as an epoxide or oxirane, is a cyclic ether with the general formula C2H4O. It is a three-membered ring consisting of two carbon atoms and one oxygen atom. This strained ring structure makes epoxides highly reactive, particularly in nucleophilic substitution reactions. The oxygen atom's electronegativity creates a partial positive charge on the adjacent carbon atoms, making them susceptible to attack by nucleophiles.

Epoxides are commonly formed by the oxidation of alkenes. This reaction can be carried out using various oxidizing agents, such as peroxy acids or hydrogen peroxide. The resulting epoxide can then undergo ring-opening reactions with a wide range of nucleophiles, including water, alcohols, amines, and thiols. Industrially, epoxides are important intermediates in the synthesis of many valuable chemicals. Ethylene oxide, the simplest epoxide, is a key precursor for the production of ethylene glycol, a common antifreeze and polyester component. Other epoxides are used in the manufacturing of epoxy resins, which are known for their strong adhesive properties and use in coatings, adhesives, and composite materials. The reactivity of the epoxide ring also makes them useful in pharmaceuticals and other fine chemical syntheses.
