Epiteete

Epiteete is a term originating from the Greek word "epithētos," meaning "added" or "attributed." In its most common usage, it refers to a descriptive adjective or an epithet that is habitually associated with a person or thing, often highlighting a particular quality or characteristic. These epithets can be found across various forms of literature, mythology, and historical accounts. For instance, in ancient Greek poetry, heroes were frequently identified by specific epithets, such as "swift-footed Achilles" or "wise Odysseus."

The purpose of an epithet can be multifaceted. It can serve to identify a character clearly within a narrative, especially in oral traditions where repetition aids memorization. It can also imbue the subject with symbolic meaning, reinforcing certain traits or virtues. Furthermore, epithets can be used for stylistic effect, adding a poetic or rhetorical flourish to language. Over time, some epithets become so ingrained that they are almost indistinguishable from the name itself.
