Entsymaattisungit is a term used primarily in speculative biology and some Finnish-language glossaries to describe a hypothetical lineage of fungus-like organisms unified by intimate enzymatic symbioses with bacteria. In this concept, microbial partners reside within or alongside the host’s cells, supplying a specialized suite of enzymes that enable rapid breakdown of complex polymers such as cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin.

Taxonomy and morphology: The term is not part of formal taxonomy, and there is no peer-reviewed consensus on classification. In reconstructions, entsymaattisungit are depicted as filamentous networks resembling true fungi, with hyphae forming dense biofilms and occasional yeast-like cells. The defining feature is the enzyme-producing partnership rather than a fixed cellular form.

Ecology and lifestyle: They are envisioned as saprotrophs and mutualists in soil and decaying plant matter, contributing to carbon cycling and nutrient turnover. Bacterial partners may reside in intracellular compartments or in extracellular matrices, enabling cooperative degradation of recalcitrant substrates and sharing of breakdown products with the host.
