Enkeltøyer

Enkeltøyer, also known as solitary jellyfish, are a term used to describe individual jellyfish species that primarily exist as solitary organisms rather than in colonies or large groups. These organisms belong to the phylum Cnidaria and class Scyphozoa, which includes the true jellyfish. Enkeltøyer are characterized by their bell-shaped, gelatinous bodies and radial symmetry. They possess tentacles that hang beneath the bell, used for capturing prey and for sensory functions.

Unlike colonial species, enkeltøyer operate independently, with each individual capable of carrying out all necessary functions such as movement, feeding, and reproduction. They typically drift with ocean currents, employing pulsations of their bell to propel through the water. Enkeltøyer are found in a variety of marine environments, from surface waters to deeper ocean layers, and are known for their simple yet effective adaptations to aquatic life.

The diet of enkeltøyer mainly consists of small fish, plankton, and other tiny marine organisms, which they capture using their stinging tentacles. Their stings can vary in potency, with some species capable of inflicting painful or even harmful bites to humans, while others pose minimal threat.
