Enhetsspridning

Enhetsspridning, or unit spreading, is a concept in quantum mechanics that describes the phenomenon where a localized quantum mechanical wave packet, initially confined to a small region of space, spreads out over time. This spreading is a fundamental consequence of the wave nature of particles as described by the Schrödinger equation.

The rate at which a wave packet spreads depends on its initial width and the energy of the particle. A more tightly localized wave packet (smaller initial width) will spread faster. Particles with lower energy also tend to spread more rapidly than those with higher energy. This behavior contrasts with classical mechanics, where a particle's position and momentum are precisely defined, and a localized object would not spontaneously spread out.

The mathematical description of enhetsspridning involves the time evolution of the wave function. For a free particle, the wave packet can be represented as a superposition of plane waves with different momenta. As time progresses, the phase of each plane wave component evolves differently, leading to constructive and destructive interference that causes the overall wave packet to broaden.
