Energialuokat

Energialuokat are energy efficiency classifications used in Finland and the European Union to indicate the energy performance of buildings, appliances and other energy-using products. The system assigns a letter grade, typically from A (most efficient) to G (least efficient), with the exact scale and thresholds varying by category. The purpose is to provide a standardized, easily comparable measure of energy use and cost impacts.

In buildings, energialuokka is part of the energy performance certificate required in many EU member states when a property is sold or rented. The certificate presents the building’s energialuokka and an estimate of annual energy consumption per square meter, along with primary energy considerations and recommendations for improvements. The rating is calculated from standardized methods that account for factors such as heating, cooling, ventilation, hot water, lighting, and the building envelope. The certificate is typically valid for about 10 years.

In appliances and other consumer products, the EU energy labeling scheme assigns an energy class on the label, showing the product’s energy consumption and comparative efficiency. This labeling intent is to help consumers make informed choices and to encourage manufacturers to improve efficiency. Over time, the labeling system has been refined to maintain clear classes and avoid excessive proliferation of subcategories.
