The name combines endothermy with a transitional or middle-ground morphology, suggesting a lineage that sits between ectothermic ancestors and more derived warm-blooded groups. It is not recognized by mainstream taxonomy and has no formal status or fossil record in scientific nomenclature; in most usages it functions as a thought experiment or world-building device rather than a real lineage.

Taxonomy and scope commonly describe endothermids as a broadly defined, transitional group rather than a strict clade. They are sometimes placed near the base of the mammal–bird divergence in speculative phylogenies or considered a stem lineage within amniotes. The concept is employed to explore the ecological and physiological steps that could enable thermoregulation, including metabolic heat production, insulation, and behavioral strategies, without asserting a precise evolutionary path.

Morphology and physiology in fictional accounts are typically described as transitional, featuring internal heat generation with flexible regulation, modest insulation, and a high-energy lifestyle. Their anatomy is often depicted as a mosaic of traits seen in both ectotherms and true endotherms, illustrating possible intermediate stages rather than a finalized design.
