Data security and privacy vulnerabilities can grow as software updates and patches stop. Public sector and critical infrastructure may face stricter governance requirements and the need for continuity planning.

Management approaches emphasize proactive lifecycle management: maintain an up-to-date asset registry, perform regular risk assessments, and develop decommissioning and replacement roadmaps. Cost–benefit analyses support prioritizing critical assets for upgrade or replacement. Migration strategies may include phased replacements, retrofit where feasible, and contingency planning.
