Endodonttinen

Endodonttinen is a Finnish term that translates to "endodontic" in English. It refers to the field of dentistry that deals with the study and treatment of the dental pulp and the tissues surrounding the root of a tooth. The dental pulp is the soft tissue found inside a tooth, containing nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. Endodontics primarily focuses on conditions affecting the pulp, such as inflammation, infection, and trauma.

The most common endodontic procedure is root canal treatment, often referred to simply as a root canal. This treatment is necessary when the dental pulp becomes inflamed or infected, typically due to deep decay, repeated dental procedures, cracks or chips in the tooth, or trauma. During a root canal, the inflamed or infected pulp is removed from the tooth's pulp chamber and root canals. The canals are then cleaned, shaped, and disinfected. Finally, they are filled with a biocompatible material, usually gutta-percha, and sealed. The tooth is then typically restored with a filling or a crown to protect it and restore its function.

Other endodontic procedures include endodontic surgery, such as apicoectomy, which may be performed if root canal treatment is unsuccessful or if there is an infection at the root tip. Endodontists are dentists who specialize in endodontics, undergoing additional training to diagnose and treat complex pulp-related issues. The goal of endodontic treatment is to save the natural tooth, alleviate pain, and prevent further infection.
