Endanlegs

Endanlegs is a term used in robotics to describe a modular leg unit designed to be combined with other units to form legged locomotion systems. Each endanleg provides actuation, sensing, and a defined contact interface, enabling rapid reconfiguration into bipeds, quadrupeds, or higher-order legged platforms. The design emphasizes fault tolerance, energy efficiency, and terrain adaptability.

A typical endanleg includes a thigh and shin segment, a foot or end effector, a joint with an actuator, and a sensing package. Actuation is commonly provided by electric motors with series elastic actuators or hydraulic cylinders, paired with torque and position sensors. A standardized mounting and connection interface allows modules to be swapped or reconfigured easily, while embedded processors handle local control tasks and share data with adjacent legs and a central controller. Proprioceptive sensors track limb state, and exteroceptive sensors at the foot provide contact and terrain information.

Control and locomotion rely on distributed algorithms that coordinate multiple endanlegs to achieve stable gaits, balance, and obstacle negotiation. Techniques often combine impedance control, model-based planning, and learning-based adaptation to respond to varying ground stiffness and irregular terrain. Energy efficiency is typically pursued through compliant actuation and optimized gait patterns.

Variants and materials vary by application. Electric variants use brushless motors with compliant elements; hydraulic variants offer higher force for heavy platforms. Some designs incorporate passive compliance to reduce impact forces and improve robustness.

Applications include research in legged robotics, disaster-response platforms, modular rovers for uneven terrain, and educational kits.
