The word is Finnish in origin, with emootio meaning emotion; the suffix -iden marks the plural/genitive form, yielding 'the emotions' or 'of the emotions' in scholarly usage.

Definition and framework: Emootioiden functions as a taxonomy or annotation schema designed to help researchers label emotional expressions in text, speech, and video. The framework generally treats emotion as existing along one or more dimensional spaces, typically using valence (positive to negative) and arousal (calm to activated), and sometimes including a social dimension. A core set of Emootioiden states is defined, with support for blended or transitional states.

Origins and adoption: The concept emerged within Nordic affective computing and digital humanities projects in the late 2010s and early 2020s, particularly among Finnish researchers documenting multilingual emotion expression in online media. It has been described in peer-reviewed work and disseminated through open annotation guidelines. Variants include a Core Emootioiden schema and an Extended Emootioiden schema with additional states.

Applications and limitations: Emootioiden is used to annotate corpora for sentiment analysis, study discourse dynamics, and evaluate user experiences in software interfaces. Critics note that taxonomy-based models risk oversimplifying affect and may be sensitive to linguistic and cultural variation.
