Emittoimans are a concept in speculative biology and science fiction describing luminous, gas-emitting organisms. They are not recognized by current real-world science, but are used to explore how chemical and optical signaling might operate in unusual ecosystems.

Origin of name and physical traits: The term derives from emitto, Latin for “to emit,” reflecting their hallmark dual signaling: bioluminescence and volatile compound release. Descriptions vary, but emittoimans are commonly depicted as gelatinous or filamentous entities, ranging from a few millimeters to several centimeters in size. Their bodies are often described as capable of producing shifting glows and dispersing scented plumes, with surface structures adapted for light production and controlled emission of gases.

Biology and behavior: In speculative ecosystems, emittoimans may rely on chemotrophy or symbiotic photosynthesis. They communicate and coordinate via light pulses and scent plumes that convey information, deter predators, or regulate social interactions.
