Embryooverføring

Embryooverføring is a process used in assisted reproductive technology, most commonly in human in vitro fertilization (IVF) and in animal breeding. It involves the transfer of an embryo from one body to another. In human IVF, embryos are typically created in a laboratory by fertilizing eggs with sperm. Once the embryos have developed for a few days, one or more are selected and transferred into the uterus of the intended mother or a gestational carrier. The goal is to achieve a pregnancy. The procedure itself is generally simple and painless, often compared to a routine gynecological examination. It involves inserting a thin catheter containing the embryo(s) through the cervix and into the uterine cavity.

In animal breeding, embryo transfer is used to accelerate the genetic improvement of livestock. Embryos are collected from a high-quality female (the donor) after she has been artificially inseminated or naturally mated. These embryos are then transferred into the reproductive tracts of surrogate mothers (recipients), who carry the pregnancies to term. This allows a genetically superior female to produce more offspring in a shorter period than she could through natural reproduction. Various techniques exist for both human and animal embryo transfer, with success rates depending on factors such as the age and health of the individuals involved, the quality of the embryo, and the expertise of the medical or veterinary professionals.
