Embarquement

Embarquement, or embarkation, is the act of boarding a vessel, aircraft, train, or other vehicle to begin a voyage or trip. It denotes the process by which passengers are admitted on board, after ticketing and any security, immigration, or cargo checks. The term is used in French and English, with “boarding” being common in everyday English for aviation and rail.

In maritime contexts, embarkation involves ticket verification, identity checks, handling of baggage, and safety briefings, followed by the loading of passengers and luggage and the vessel’s departure. Disembarkation is the reverse process at the end of a voyage.

In aviation, embarkation begins after check-in and security screening, with boarding passes scanned and seats assigned. Passengers board in assigned zones or groups, cabin crew assist with carry-on items, and the aircraft doors are closed before departure.

Regulatory and operational practices vary by country and transport mode. Airports and ports enforce boarding times, gate controls, and safety procedures, often supported by electronic tickets and automated boarding systems. In some contexts, embarquement also covers loading cargo or personnel for missions onto ships, aircraft, or trains.

Etymology traces the term to the French embarquer, meaning to put on board. In English, embarkation and boarding are the common terms, with emploi and usage shaped by the specific transport modality and regulatory environment.
