Emballagefilm

Emballagefilm, often translated as packaging film, is a thin, flexible plastic film used to protect and enclose goods during storage, handling and transport. It is typically supplied on rolls and can be used with hand dispensers or wrapping machines. The term covers several film types designed for different wrapping and packaging needs.

The two main categories are stretch film and shrink film. Stretch film is wrapped around a load and tightens by tension, securing the items and offering weather protection. Shrink film is applied loosely and heated so it contracts to form a tight wrap. Most are based on polyolefins such as LDPE or LLDPE; PVC and PET are less common due to environmental concerns. Performance traits include cling, puncture resistance, clarity and sealability.

Manufacture typically involves extrusion of the polymer into thin film, using either blown-film or cast-film processes. Films are produced in rolls and can be pre-stretched, pre-printed, or laminated with other materials for improved barrier properties or branding.

Applications include pallet wrapping, consumer goods packaging, food packaging and retail displays. Standard PE films offer moisture protection with limited gas barrier; specialized multi-layer films can include barrier layers to extend shelf life. Environmental considerations include recycling in appropriate streams, and the availability of compostable or biodegradable variants, which usually require industrial composting facilities.
