Eläinkuitujen, often translated as animal fibers, refers to a category of natural fibers derived from animals. These fibers are primarily composed of protein, most notably keratin, and possess distinct properties that make them valuable for a wide range of applications, particularly in textiles and insulation.

The most common animal fiber is wool, obtained from sheep. Wool is known for its warmth, elasticity, and ability to absorb moisture without feeling damp. Other notable animal fibers include cashmere, derived from the undercoat of cashmere goats, prized for its softness and luxury. Mohair comes from Angora goats and is characterized by its lustrous and silky texture. Silk, produced by silkworms, is exceptionally strong, smooth, and has a natural sheen. Alpaca fiber, from the alpaca, is soft, warm, and hypoallergenic. Angora wool, from Angora rabbits, is exceptionally soft and fluffy.

The production of animal fibers involves harvesting the hair or secretion from animals through methods like shearing, combing, or collecting shed fibers. The collected raw material is then processed to clean, sort, and spin it into yarn. These yarns are subsequently used for weaving or knitting into fabrics for clothing, upholstery, and other textile products. Animal fibers are also utilized for their insulating properties in bedding, outerwear, and technical applications. The specific properties of each animal fiber, such as fineness, crimp, and staple length, influence its suitability for different uses and its overall value.
