Elongationskurvor, meaning elongation curves in German, are graphical representations used in engineering and materials science to depict the relationship between stress and strain for a material. These curves are fundamental to understanding a material's mechanical behavior under tensile or compressive loads. Typically, an elongationskurve plots the applied stress on the vertical axis against the resulting strain on the horizontal axis. Strain is often expressed as a percentage or a dimensionless ratio, representing the change in length relative to the original length. Stress is usually measured in units of pressure, such as megapascals (MPa) or pounds per square inch (psi).

The shape of an elongationskurve provides crucial information about a material's properties. In the elastic region, stress is directly proportional to strain, and the material will return to its original shape upon removal of the load. This linear portion of the curve is characterized by the material's Young's modulus, which indicates its stiffness. Beyond the elastic limit, the material enters the plastic region, where permanent deformation occurs.
