Eleutherodactylids

Eleutherodactylids are a family of frogs belonging to the order Anura. This family, also known as rain frogs or pebble frogs, is characterized by the absence of a free-swimming tadpole stage. Instead, direct development occurs, with eggs hatching into miniature froglets. This reproductive strategy is a defining feature of the group. They are primarily found in the Americas, with the greatest diversity occurring in Central and South America.

The family contains numerous genera and species, and their taxonomy is still undergoing revision. Many species are small and terrestrial, inhabiting leaf litter, soil, or bromeliads. Their coloration often provides camouflage within their environment. Diet typically consists of small invertebrates. Some species are known for their distinctive vocalizations, which are used for communication and mate attraction. Due to their widespread distribution and reliance on terrestrial habitats, many eleutherodactylid species are vulnerable to habitat loss and climate change.
