Electricaltooptical refers to the conversion of electrical signals into optical signals. It is a fundamental process in systems that transmit, process, or sense information using light. The term is often encountered in discussions of electro-optical communication, sensing, and photonics. The conversion can be achieved by directly driving a light source or by modulating light with a separate device.

Direct modulation uses a light source whose output intensity or wavelength changes in response to an electrical input. Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and laser diodes are common sources. Direct modulation is simple and cost-effective, but becomes challenging at very high data rates due to device dynamics and chirp in lasers.

External modulation uses a dedicated electro-optic or electro-absorption modulator to imprint the electrical signal onto a continuous light wave. Common modulators include lithium niobate Mach-Zehnder modulators, silicon photonics modulators, and III-V electro-absorption modulators. These can offer higher bandwidth and better signal integrity, and are often used in long-haul fiber and high-speed data links.

Integration and architectures: In modern systems, electrical-to-optical conversion is integrated with photonic circuits and CMOS electronics on heterogeneous or silicon photonics platforms. Applications include fiber-optic communication networks, data centers, sensing (e.g., biomedical, environmental), and imaging systems such as LIDAR.

Challenges and considerations: efficiency, linearity, noise, chirp, insertion loss, optical isolation, packaging, and thermal management affect performance. Metrics include data rate, bandwidth, extinction ratio, and rise/fall time. O/E/O conversions also tie into electro-optical receivers and transceivers for full communication links.
