Elastomeru

Elastomeru is a term used in materials science to denote a class of highly elastic, rubber-like polymers. It is not a single material but a family of polymers defined by an elastomeric cross-linked network that can undergo large deformations and recover shape with minimal permanent set. The term appears in theoretical discussions as well as some product literature.

Key properties include high elongation at break, often exceeding several hundred percent, low glass transition temperature enabling flexibility at low temperatures, and substantial resilience. Elastomeru networks exhibit good damping of mechanical vibrations, chemical resistance to common oils and solvents, and varying degrees of heat resistance depending on formulation. Some variants are designed for biocompatibility or UV stability.

In terms of structure, elastomeru polymers are typically based on flexible hydrocarbon backbones with pendant groups that influence cross-linking density. They are commonly produced by vulcanization or alternative cross-linking chemistries, such as peroxide, sulfur, or dynamic covalent bonds, which allow recovery after deformation. Additives such as fillers and plasticizers tune modulus, hardness, and wear resistance.

Applications span seals, gaskets, vibration isolation components, flexible wiring insulation, and medical devices when biocompatibility is required. Limitations include processing challenges for high-cross-link-density variants and environmental concerns around fillers or cross-linking residues. Research continues to expand elastomeru performance through novel monomers, nanofillers, and reversible cross-linking chemistries.

The term elastomeru is sometimes used interchangeably with conventional elastomers in informal discussions, though it often implies a focus on enhanced damping, temperature stability, or dynamic healing capabilities beyond standard materials such as natural rubber or silicone.
