Elaborating

Elaborating is the act of extending a statement or idea by adding more detail, explanation, or development. It involves moving from a concise assertion to a fuller account that clarifies meaning, supports claims, or demonstrates how something works. The term derives from the Latin elaborare, meaning to work out or develop fully.

In writing and speech, elaborating is a common technique for improving comprehension and persuasiveness. It can include providing definitions, offering examples, describing steps, presenting evidence, drawing analogies, or outlining consequences. However, excessive elaboration may produce redundancy or obscure the main point.

Elaborating appears in various fields. In education, elaborative encoding helps memory by connecting new information to existing knowledge; in instructional design, elaboration theory guides the sequencing of content from simple to complex; in design and analysis, elaboration means expanding models or specifications with more components or details.
