Ektotermeille

Ektotermeille is a term used in contemporary energy design and speculative materials science to describe a class of systems and materials that enable external thermal energy exchange with the environment, allowing passive heating or cooling without conventional active power input. The word combines ekto (outside), therme (heat), and the suffix -ille to denote a functional class.

Principle: Ektotermeille devices operate by exploiting ambient thermal gradients between a structure or device and its surroundings. They store and release thermal energy through reversible processes in solid or composite media, such as phase-change materials, porous solids, or specially engineered textiles, often enabling heat absorption when external conditions are favorable and heat release when conditions reverse. The emphasis is on passive or minimally assisted transfer, reducing reliance on pumps, fans, or chillers.

Forms and implementations: In architectural design, ektotermeille components may be integrated into walls, roofs, or facades as PCM or aerogel-based composites; in clothing, ektotermeille textiles regulate microclimates; in electronics, thin-film or micro-encapsulated materials manage surface temperature.
