Ekspositsioonimõõdikud, often translated as exposure meters, are devices used in photography and filmmaking to measure the amount of light in a scene. They help determine the correct exposure settings, such as aperture, shutter speed, and ISO, to achieve a well-lit photograph or video.

There are two main types of exposure meters: incident and reflected. Incident meters measure the light falling on the subject from the light source. They are placed near the subject and pointed towards the camera, providing a reading of the actual light intensity. Reflected meters, on the other hand, measure the light bouncing off the subject. These are the meters built into most cameras, and they point towards the subject.

Modern cameras typically have built-in reflected light meters that analyze the scene and suggest exposure settings automatically. However, dedicated handheld exposure meters, both incident and reflected, are still used by many professional photographers and cinematographers who require precise control over their exposure. These external meters can offer more accurate readings, especially in challenging lighting conditions, such as high contrast scenes or low light environments.

Understanding and utilizing exposure meters is fundamental to achieving desired photographic results. They are essential tools for controlling the brightness, contrast, and overall aesthetic of an image, ensuring that neither the highlights are overexposed (blown out) nor the shadows are underexposed (too dark). Proper use of an exposure meter allows for consistent and predictable photographic outcomes.
