Eksponeringeskompensering, often abbreviated as EV compensation or exposure compensation, is a feature found on digital cameras that allows the photographer to override the camera's meter-based exposure setting. While automatic modes aim to produce a well-exposed image based on the camera's internal light meter, sometimes this judgment may not align with the photographer's creative intent or the specific lighting conditions. The feature is typically accessed through a dedicated button or a setting within the camera's menu. It is usually adjusted in increments called "stops" of light. A positive value, such as +1 EV, tells the camera to make the image brighter than its meter suggests, effectively adding more light. For instance, when photographing a subject against a very bright background (like a person silhouetted against a sunset), the camera's meter might underexpose the subject. Applying positive exposure compensation can brighten the subject to a more pleasing level. Conversely, when photographing a predominantly dark scene or a subject that you want to appear darker for artistic effect, negative compensation can be used.
