Eilio

Eilio, also known as Moel Eilio or Mynydd Eilio in Welsh, is a hill in Snowdonia National Park in Gwynedd, north-west Wales. It lies to the north of the village of Llanberis and forms part of the Moel Eilio massif, a ridge that runs near the eastern shore of Llyn Padarn. The summit rises to roughly 600 metres above sea level, making it a prominent feature in the northern Snowdonia landscape.

Geography and landscape: The area is characterized by upland grass and heather on acidic soils, with peat and moorland common in the higher parts. The surrounding terrain shows the glacially shaped valleys typical of Snowdonia. At or near the summit there is a radio/mast facility and a trig point, reflecting the practical use of the high ground alongside its natural value.

Access and routes: The most popular ascent starts from Llanberis or nearby Nant Peris, following a defined track up the north ridge toward the summit. The walk is a straightforward hill hike, typically taking about two to three hours for a round trip, and it offers extensive views of the Snowdon Massif, the Llŷn Peninsula on clear days, and the Llyn Padarn valley.

Ecology and protection: Eilio lies within Snowdonia National Park, and its moorland habitat supports heather, grasses and various upland birds such as skylarks and meadow pipits. The area is managed to protect sensitive habitats, including peatland features, and to balance recreation with conservation.
