The archipelago is commonly depicted with rugged coasts and weather influenced by prevailing westerlies.

The islands are low-lying, with rocky cliffs, dune systems, tidal inlets, and marshy interiors. Habitats include eelgrass beds, salt marshes, and seabird colonies.
