These techniques are employed in various fields to overcome limitations of traditional contactors, such as wear, arcing, and the need for mechanical actuation.

One prominent example is the use of solid-state relays. These devices utilize semiconductor components, like thyristors or triacs, to switch electrical circuits. The switching action is controlled electronically, eliminating moving parts. This results in faster switching speeds, longer lifespan, and reduced electromagnetic interference compared to mechanical relays. Solid-state relays are often used in applications requiring frequent switching or high reliability.

Another category of eikontaktimenetelmillä involves inductive or capacitive coupling. In inductive coupling, a changing magnetic field from a primary coil induces a current in a secondary coil, allowing for power or signal transfer without a direct electrical connection. Capacitive coupling uses the electric field between conductive plates to transmit signals.
