Ehkäisylastari, also known as the withdrawal method or coitus interruptus, is a form of natural family planning where the penis is withdrawn from the vagina before ejaculation to prevent pregnancy. This method relies on the male partner’s ability to recognize and control the moment of ejaculation, avoiding semen entry into the vagina.

The effectiveness of the withdrawal method varies depending on consistent and correct use. When used perfectly, it has a failure rate of about 4% within a year, meaning roughly 4 out of 100 users may experience an unintended pregnancy. However, in typical use, the failure rate rises to around 18%, as mistakes in timing or technique can occur. This method does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs), making it less comprehensive than barrier methods like condoms.

The withdrawal method has been used for centuries across various cultures, often as a traditional approach to birth control before modern contraceptives became widely available. While it requires self-discipline and communication between partners, it remains a low-cost option that does not involve hormonal or surgical interventions.

Critics of the method note that it can be stressful for some couples due to the need for constant vigilance and the potential for reduced sexual spontaneity. Additionally, pre-ejaculate fluid may contain sperm in some cases, further complicating its reliability.
