Ehkäisyrungasen is a Finnish term that translates to "contraceptive ring" in English. It refers to a type of hormonal contraceptive used by women to prevent pregnancy. The ring is a flexible, soft plastic ring that is inserted into the vagina by the user. It releases hormones, primarily estrogen and progestin, which are absorbed through the vaginal wall into the bloodstream. These hormones work by preventing ovulation, thickening cervical mucus to block sperm, and thinning the lining of the uterus, making it less likely for a fertilized egg to implant.

The contraceptive ring is typically worn for three weeks, followed by a one-week break during which a withdrawal bleed occurs. After the break, a new ring is inserted. Its effectiveness is comparable to other combined hormonal contraceptives like birth control pills, provided it is used correctly.
