Eekhoorn

Eekhoorn is the Dutch word for squirrel. Squirrels are small to medium-sized rodents belonging to the family Sciuridae. They are characterized by their bushy tails, sharp claws, and typically long incisors that grow continuously. Squirrels are found in a wide variety of habitats across the globe, including forests, woodlands, parks, and even urban areas.

There are numerous species of squirrels, broadly categorized into tree squirrels and ground squirrels. Tree squirrels, like the common Eurasian red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) or the American gray squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis), spend most of their lives in trees. They build nests, often called dreys, from twigs and leaves, and are well-adapted for climbing and leaping between branches. Ground squirrels, such as the thirteen-lined ground squirrel or the marmot, typically live in burrows dug into the ground.

Squirrels are primarily herbivores, with their diet consisting mainly of nuts, seeds, fruits, fungi, and bark. They are known for their habit of hoarding food, burying nuts and seeds for later consumption, which plays a role in seed dispersal. Some species are omnivorous and may also eat insects, bird eggs, or small vertebrates.

Reproduction in squirrels varies by species, but they generally have a gestation period of several weeks and give birth to litters of young that are born blind and helpless. The young are cared for by the mother until they are old enough to fend for themselves. Squirrels are often seen as common and familiar animals in many parts of the world.
