Edukimi

Edukimi, the Albanian term for education, refers to the lifelong process by which individuals acquire knowledge, skills, values, and dispositions. It encompasses formal schooling, vocational training, and the informal learning experiences that occur in families and communities. The word’s etymology traces to Latin educatio and reflects historical influence from European educational traditions.

Edukimi is commonly understood as both formal and informal. Formal edukimi occurs in structured institutions such as preschools, primary and secondary schools, and tertiary or higher education. Non-formal edukimi covers organized educational activities outside the formal system, including adult education, continuing education, and vocational training. Informal edukimi consists of learning that happens outside organized programs, through family life, peer interaction, work, media, and everyday activities.

Education systems are typically organized by government authorities, with ministries or departments responsible for setting curricula, training teachers, assessing outcomes, and allocating resources. The aim of edukimi is to develop literacy and numeracy, critical thinking, problem solving, civic participation, and the skills needed to participate effectively in society and the economy.
