Educazione, in its broad sense, is the process of facilitating learning and the development of knowledge, skills, values, and dispositions. It encompasses formal schooling, non-formal programs, and informal learning that occurs through daily life. In Italian usage, educazione also denotes upbringing and manners, reflecting a broader sense of cultivation beyond instruction alone.

Educazione can be categorized into formal, non-formal, and informal forms. Formal education includes structured programs delivered in schools and universities, typically organized into levels such as primary, secondary, and tertiary education. Non-formal education refers to organized learning outside the formal system, such as vocational training, adult education, and community programs. Informal education arises from daily activities, family life, work, media, and peer interactions, and is often continuous across the lifespan.

Historically, the idea of educazione has evolved from ancient philosophical traditions and religious institutions to modern systems of universal schooling. The rise of nation-states and democratic ideals in the 19th and 20th centuries led to expanded access to compulsory education in many countries. International initiatives, including UNESCO programs and the Sustainable Development Goals, have promoted universal literacy, quality education, and lifelong learning for all.

Key components of educazione include curriculum design, teaching methods (pedagogy), assessment and certification, and the governance and funding of educational institutions.
