Edgeszámítástechnika

Edgeszámítástechnika, often translated as edge computing, is a distributed computing paradigm that brings computation and data storage closer to the sources of data. This contrasts with traditional cloud computing, where data is sent to a centralized data center for processing. Edge computing aims to improve response times and save bandwidth by processing data locally, at or near the "edge" of the network.

The concept of edge computing has gained prominence with the proliferation of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, which generate vast amounts of data. By processing this data at the edge, organizations can achieve real-time analytics and decision-making. Applications that benefit from edge computing include autonomous vehicles, smart factories, augmented reality, and real-time monitoring systems.

Key components of edge computing include edge devices, edge gateways, and edge servers. Edge devices are the sensors and actuators that collect data. Edge gateways aggregate data from multiple devices and may perform some initial processing. Edge servers, located closer to the data sources than central cloud servers, handle more complex computations and storage.

The advantages of edge computing include reduced latency, increased bandwidth efficiency, enhanced security and privacy, and improved reliability. By processing data locally, sensitive information can be kept within a local network, reducing the risk of exposure. Furthermore, edge computing can continue to operate even if the connection to the central cloud is interrupted. However, edge computing also presents challenges such as managing a distributed infrastructure, ensuring security across numerous edge nodes, and developing appropriate software for edge environments.
