Echtzeitaufgaben, also known as real-time tasks, are computational processes that must be completed within strict time constraints. These deadlines are critical for the correct functioning of the system. Failure to meet a deadline can lead to system failure, degradation of service, or even catastrophic consequences depending on the application. The primary characteristic of Echtzeitaufgaben is their predictability and determinism.

There are generally two categories of Echtzeitaufgaben: hard real-time tasks and soft real-time tasks. Hard real-time tasks have absolute deadlines that must be met without exception. Missing a hard deadline is considered a system failure. Examples include tasks in flight control systems, anti-lock braking systems, and industrial automation. Soft real-time tasks have deadlines, but missing them occasionally is tolerable, though it may reduce the quality of the service. Examples include streaming media, online gaming, and interactive user interfaces.

The development and scheduling of Echtzeitaufgaben require specialized algorithms and operating systems. Real-time operating systems (RTOS) are designed to manage these tasks efficiently, prioritizing them based on their deadlines and criticality. Scheduling algorithms like Rate Monotonic Scheduling (RMS) and Earliest Deadline First (EDF) are commonly used to ensure that tasks are executed in a timely manner. Factors such as task periodicity, execution time, and deadlines are crucial for effective real-time system design. Ensuring that the system's workload does not exceed its processing capacity is a fundamental challenge.
