Periodicity is the property of something occurring or repeating at regular intervals or cycles. It is a concept used across science and mathematics to describe predictable repetition, whether in time, space, or structure.

In mathematics, a function f is periodic with period T if f(x + T) = f(x) for all x in its domain. The smallest positive such T is called the fundamental period. Common examples include sine and cosine functions, which have a fundamental period of 2π. Not all functions are periodic; some are aperiodic or only exhibit partial or approximate repetition.

In discrete settings, a sequence a[n] is periodic if a[n + N] = a[n] for all integers n, with N as the period (the smallest positive N). This idea extends to digital signals and time series, where repetition in samples or values is measured in steps or time units.

In physics and engineering, periodicity describes motions or waves that repeat over time. Periodic motion includes simple harmonic motion, where the period T is the time for one complete cycle. If the motion has angular frequency ω, the period is T = 2π/ω. Periodicity underlies wave phenomena, oscillations, and resonances, and it is central to Fourier analysis and signal processing.

In chemistry, periodicity refers to recurring trends in elements’ properties when they are arranged by atomic number. Across a period, properties such as atomic radius, ionization energy, and electronegativity show systematic variation due to electron configuration. Down a group, trends reappear as new electron shells are added. The periodic table embodies this concept by organizing elements to reflect these repeating patterns.
