EXIFtieto

EXIFtieto is a fictional metadata framework conceived to augment the Exchangeable Image File (EXIF) data embedded in digital photographs with broader contextual information. The name blends EXIF with 'tieto', a word meaning information in several Nordic languages, reflecting its intent to provide richer data about images while respecting existing EXIF structure.

Overview and goals: It aims to add structured fields for attribution, licensing, provenance, processing history, and privacy controls; encourage machine-readable descriptions using a lightweight schema that could be serialized as JSON-LD or RDF, while remaining backward compatible with standard EXIF readers.

Design and scope: EXIFtieto seeks to complement EXIF by introducing optional namespaces for extended attributes without altering essential EXIF tags. It would define schemas for photographer attribution, usage rights, camera and sensor metadata, event context, and post-processing steps, while coexisting with IPTC and XMP.

Adoption and status: The concept has appeared in academic discussions and hobbyist tooling but has not been standardized by major standards bodies; practical adoption remains limited. Some experimental tools export EXIFtieto data as sidecar files or embed extended tags in compatible containers.
