EVerify
E-Verify is an Internet-based system administered by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) in partnership with the Social Security Administration (SSA) that helps participating employers verify the work authorization of newly hired employees. The system compares information from Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification, with data from DHS and SSA to confirm whether the employee is authorized to work in the United States. Participation is voluntary for most employers, though some federal contractors and certain states mandate its use. Employers typically run E-Verify after a job offer is made and Form I-9 is completed; results are usually returned within minutes as either Employment Authorized or a Tentative Nonconfirmation (TNC). In a TNC, the employee may contest the finding with SSA or DHS; if a Final Nonconfirmation is issued, the employer must terminate employment.
E-Verify does not authenticate immigration status or replace Form I-9. It confirms only that the submitted information
