EUDaten

EUDaten refers to data connected with the European Union, including data produced by EU institutions, member states, and organizations operating within the EU. It encompasses official statistics, regulatory records, public sector information, and research and economic datasets relating to EU policies and populations.

Governance and policy: The handling of EUDaten is shaped by European data protection rules such as the GDPR and the ePrivacy Directive, as well as sector-specific regulations. The European Strategy for Data promotes the creation of European Data Spaces—interop data ecosystems that enable lawful access and reuse across sectors while protecting privacy and competition. Cross-border data flows are managed to balance innovation with data sovereignty.

Access and licensing: Many EUDaten assets are published via open data portals and scientific repositories under open licenses. Nonetheless, datasets containing personal data or sensitive information may be restricted or require licenses and legitimate use cases.

Infrastructure and challenges: Realizing broad EUDaten reuse relies on interoperable metadata, common data standards, and secure, scalable data infrastructures. Ongoing challenges include ensuring data quality, protecting privacy, avoiding fragmentation across member states, and aligning national policies with EU-level governance.
