ESDsuojat, in Finnish usage, refer to the measures, devices, and materials designed to protect electronic components and equipment from electrostatic discharge (ESD). ESD can cause immediate or latent damage to semiconductors and circuits, degrade performance, or lead to failure. ESD protection is implemented throughout handling, assembly, testing, and packaging processes, and relies on providing a controlled path for static charges to flow to ground.

Common ESD protection elements include grounded workstations with anti-static mats, and wrist straps; ESD-safe packaging materials such as anti-static bags and foam; conductive or dissipative tools and containers; ESD footwear or flooring; and humidity control. In addition, ESD-safe clothing and cleanroom practices help minimize charge generation.

Implementation is guided by standards and programs, such as IEC 61340-5-1 and ANSI/ESD S20.20, which define the requirements for an ESD control program. Measurements of resistance, charge generation, and discharge performance are used to verify protection levels. Regular training and audits are part of most ESD programs.

Applications include electronics manufacturing, repair laboratories, computer service, data centers, and any environment handling sensitive components. Proper ESD protection reduces the risk of device failures, improves yield, and extends product life.
