EHVnett

EHVnett is a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission network concept. It aims to establish a pan-European grid infrastructure for efficiently transporting electricity over long distances with minimal losses. The core idea behind EHVnett is to utilize ultra-high voltage direct current technology, typically in the range of several hundred kilovolts (kV) to over a thousand kilovolts, to connect national and regional power grids.

The primary benefits of an EHVnett system are severalfold. Firstly, HVDC transmission inherently has lower energy losses compared to alternating current (AC) for long-distance transport, making it more economically viable and environmentally friendly. Secondly, such a network could facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources, particularly those located in remote areas like offshore wind farms or solar power plants in southern Europe, by providing a robust and efficient transport mechanism to demand centers.

Furthermore, EHVnett could enhance grid stability and reliability by enabling rapid power flow adjustments and providing crucial balancing services across different regions. It is also envisioned to increase the security of energy supply by diversifying import and export routes and reducing reliance on single transmission pathways. The development of EHVnett involves significant investment and complex engineering challenges, including the design and construction of converter stations and the laying of advanced HVDC cables, often requiring international cooperation and standardization.
