EHBO

EHBO, short for Eerste Hulp Bij Ongevallen, is the initial care given to someone who is injured or suddenly becomes ill, before professional medical treatment is available. The aim is to preserve life, prevent the condition from worsening, and promote recovery by maintaining vital functions and stabilizing the person until further help arrives.

Typical EHBO training covers assessment and safety, calling emergency services, basic life support (including recognition of unconsciousness and basic airway management), bleeding control and wound care, handling burns, fractures and immobilization, poisoning and poisoning prevention, choking, and recognizing signs of shock. It also introduces the use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) where available and advice on when not to move a seriously injured person.

Training and certification are offered by organizations such as the Nederlandse Rode Kruis (Dutch Red Cross) and Oranje Kruis, with courses ranging from basic first aid to more advanced modules. Certifications usually require periodic refreshers to maintain competence. EHBO knowledge is valued in schools, workplaces, sports clubs, and communities, promoting a culture of readiness and safety.
